November 25, 2010, 2:00pm-5:30pm
Gefinor Rotana Hotel, Beirut
Coordinated by: Dr. Haroutoune Armenian, Professor in Residence, Epidemiology Department, University of California in Los Angeles(UCLA)- School of Public Health, USA & ex-President, American University of Armenia

Aim of the workshop

The potential for publication for an epidemiologic research effort is very much determined starting with the development of the hypothesis and also at all phases of the project. One needs to start thinking of the paper for publication as the final product of the research from the inception of the research project. It is advisable to start writing your first draft of the final manuscript as early as possible.

The proposed workshop will discuss an approach for the integration of the scientific writing for publication within the research process. Following a presentation of the most salient points about writing papers for publication, the workshop participant will be presented the inner workings of the paper review process with actual blinded examples of reviews of epidemiologic manuscripts that were submitted for publication. As part of the workshop, instructions to authors of a couple of epidemiologic journals will be reviewed.

Also, during the workshop advisory guidelines about writing papers for publication will be presented from the most experienced senior editor of epidemiology journals.

Learning Objectives: By the end of the workshop the participant will be able to:

1.  Integrate the writing of a final manuscript as an ongoing process parallel to the conduct of the research project

2.  Define clearly a detailed outline for the presentation and content of a scientific paper including its title, abstract, introduction, methods, results, tables, and discussion

3.  Aim at applying sound epidemiologic principles in the development of a scientific manuscript

4. Decide for the proposed manuscript, a pathway of decision-making as to the choice of journals, special features and a timetable
